Vale Sangora — The Setting Explained
Short answer
The game is an open-world dark fantasy RPG set in 14th-century Europe. Vale Sangora sits in the Carpathian Mountains, with the town of Svartrau and its castle at the centre of official material.
What is in the valley
- Forests, plains, swamps and mountains.
- Settlements, ruins and ancient sites.
- Caves and mines.
- Monsters drawn from Central and Eastern European folklore.
Rebel Wolves has emphasised hand-crafted exploration rather than a checklist of scattered icons — which, combined with exploration being free in time units, means looking around properly is both encouraged and cheap.
The bestiary is folklore, not invention
Official material names uriashi, likhos, kobolds and tatzelwurms. These are real figures from Romanian, Slavic, Germanic and Alpine legend respectively, which suggests a bestiary built on regional folklore rather than on generic fantasy monsters.
Giants who were here before us; the one-eyed thing that follows a man and does not leave; the spirit in the mine that takes the ore and leaves the stone; the clawed worm on the high pass.
