The Same Quest, Day and Night: A Worked Example
Short answer
Very different, and in a specific way: the day gives you people and magic, the night gives you access. Rebel Wolves demonstrated this by playing one quest — finding a legendary silver sword in Svartrau Cathedral — twice over. Human Coen walks in the front door, talks to the clergy, does a favour and is handed the information. Vampire Coen never uses the door at all: he climbs the outside of the building and reads the same information off a fresco and a book he reaches by balcony.
This is the clearest evidence yet that "human by day, vampire by night" is a routing decision rather than a lighting preset. Both runs are shown reaching the same crypt. Neither is presented as the correct one.
The two routes, side by side
| Day — human Coen | Night — vampire Coen | |
|---|---|---|
| Getting in | Walk in. The cathedral is open, and while Infamy is low the guards wave you through. | The gate is shut and well guarded. Plane Shift and Shadowstep take you over the roofs and scaffolds instead. |
| Who you meet | The deacon, the almshouse residents, Father Floren mid-baptism. | Nobody who will talk. Patrols who will not, and Xanthe conducting a ritual. |
| How the lead is found | A favour for the deacon buys library access, and the Annals of Svartrau Cathedral name the burial site. | A fresco read from the scaffolding identifies the saint and his sword; the library is entered through a balcony door. |
| Magic | Available. Compel Soul questions a corpse the game has marked with circling moths. | None. Hexes are a human-form ability, so the same corpse cannot be questioned. |
| Combat | Sword, directional, Activation Charges, and a Muron in the sealed plague wing. | Claws — still directional — plus Blood Guards and, if you go down to her, Xanthe. |
| The obstacle | Height. The scaffolding is simply out of reach. | People. There is nobody to ask, and information has to be found rather than given. |
What the day is actually for
The daytime run is a conversation. The deacon denies the crypt exists, then trades: find the missing caretaker and the library is yours. That errand leads through an almshouse where a resident sells a rumour, through a sealed wing where plague patients were walled in and left, and into a fight with a Muron — a vampire whose transformation failed, which screams to stun and moves with a broken version of the vampire blink.
The resolution needs magic. A corpse with moths circling above it can be questioned with Compel Soul, and that is how the caretaker's fate is established. The narration is explicit that this could not have been done at night — which turns a flavour ability into a scheduling constraint. If a quest's evidence is a body, the night route has to solve it another way or come back in daylight.
What the night is actually for
The night run is a climb. Plane Shift scales walls and ceilings, Shadowstep blinks to almost any reachable point, and together they open a cathedral complex that human Coen can only see the ground floor of. The same scaffolding that was out of reach by day becomes the route, and the vantage it gives is where a fresco identifying Saint Mihai is finally read.
It also costs you something before you start. A vampire's health bar doubles as his hunger, and Coen begins every night already thirsting — so the first item on the agenda is feeding, whether or not you planned for it. The walkthrough picks a drunk standing alone, and the choice offered is how far to go: stop early and he wakes up, go all the way and he does not. That decision is only yours while you still have control of it; hunger takes it away.
The lesson for planning a route
- Ask what the obstacle is, not what the quest is. If it is height or a locked perimeter, that is a night job. If it is a person or a corpse, it is a day job.
- Magic is day-only. Every hex — Compel Soul, Burning Blood, Mercurial Fervour — is unavailable after dusk. Haunted sites are day-only for the same reason.
- Night costs a feed before it costs anything else. Budget the first act of every night for hunger.
- A boss can be an option rather than a wall. Xanthe sits in the middle of the night route, and the same preview goes around her.
- The clock does not care which route you took. Both cost time on the same objectives — the hourglass appears on opening the crypt either way.
The quest is also, in Rebel Wolves' own framing, entirely optional. The silver sword is preparation for Brencis, not a step toward him — and the narration says outright that you may abandon the whole thread and take a different path to defeating him. That is the sandbox claim stated as plainly as it has been stated anywhere.
Day and night are separate budgets of eight units each, and a phase cannot borrow from the next one. Lay a route out and see which half of the cycle your objectives really belong to.
Schedule it →Frequently asked questions
The questions people are actually searching for, answered from confirmed sources.
- Can you play the same quest as both human and vampire in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
- Yes. Rebel Wolves demonstrated one quest played twice — once by day as human Coen, once by night as a vampire. The entry, the tools and the way the information is found all differ, but both routes reach the same objective.
- Can Coen use hexes at night?
- No. Hex magic is a human-form ability, so it is unavailable to vampire Coen. This includes Compel Soul, which means a corpse the game marks as questionable cannot be questioned at night, and it makes haunted sites day-only activities.
- What is Plane Shift in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
- Plane Shift is the vampire power that lets Coen scale walls and move across ceilings. Paired with Shadowstep, it is what makes roofs, scaffolding and walled courtyards reachable at night when human Coen cannot get to them at all.
- Does talking to NPCs use up time in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
- Some conversations do. The game marks anything that will advance the thirty-day clock with an hourglass icon, and the walkthrough shows that icon on a dialogue objective — so reporting back on a quest can itself be a costed action.
- Do you start each night hungry in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
- Yes. As a vampire, Coen's health bar also represents his hunger, and he begins every night thirsting for blood. Feeding is effectively the first task of any night, and it also raises Corruption, which gates the deeper Vampirism perks.
Both routes come from a developer-narrated walkthrough of a pre-beta build. Quest structure at retail may differ, and no time costs for any step are published. Re-verified against the retail build from 3 September 2026.
