Coverage describes Xanthe as the eldest of Brencis's officers and the one turned toward the esoteric rather than the practical — less interested in holding the valley than in what lies past it.

The reported characterisation is of someone who hears voices from beyond the pale and reads them as instruction, pursuing a transcendence the rest of the regime has no use for.
