The Infamy System Explained
Short answer
Infamy is a global reputation tracked separately from your individual relationships. It rises through killing, theft you are caught at, attacks on Brencis's organisation and certain quest choices. It cuts both ways.
What high Infamy costs you
Nine levels, each proclaiming an edict at the next dawn: extra patrols, then checkpoints, then price rises, then commanders who recognise Coen on sight, then empty streets after dusk, then headhunters, then every soldier recognising him, then stronger soldiers, and finally Svartrau's gates shut. Three independent retail sources publish that ladder and agree on all nine rungs — the full list, with what each one costs a route, is on the Infamy page.
They are not ambient world reactions. They are measures Brencis enacts specifically because of you. Creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz described them as things done to make Coen's life harder, naming bounty hunters, more military patrols and putting a city on lockdown — and the retail ladder is recognisably that list, delivered in order. The overview trailer extended the same idea to Brencis's three officers: they do not stand idle while you dismantle their operations, and the regime escalates as you succeed.
What high Infamy buys you
- Groups opposed to Brencis are more likely to trust you.
- Intimidation is reported to become easier.
Infamy and the clock
The connection people miss: heavier patrols and restricted access are time costs. If Infamy makes a town harder to move through, every objective inside that town gets more expensive. Reputation is a scheduling variable.
