Coen was born to a peasant family in Vale Sangora, the eldest of four children. He went into the valley's silver mines alongside his father as a boy, and wanted to travel beyond the mountains — but never did, because his family could not spare him.
When plague reached the valley, the ruling decree was that the afflicted be executed. Coen's younger sister fell ill, and the king's men came to carry out the order.
What stopped them was an ancient vampire, who killed the knights and healed the girl with his own blood — for a price. The price was Coen. The turning was attempted, and it failed: Coen neither died nor became a full vampire, and his sister was taken.
What he became instead is the Dawnwalker — human by day, vampire by night, holding a transition that never completed. The family he stayed in the valley for is the family he now has thirty days to reach.
